How To Simplify Complexity

As the third article in a series, we continue to explore the benefits of understanding and maintaining the business architecture.  While the focus of this article is on high-risk, large-scale and complex web development projects, there are basic principles that remain the same regardless of the size of the project.  It all begins with understanding the importance of the business architecture.

Scaling up means adding more resources and power to infrastructure and that doesn’t happen overnight.  What usually happens is that enterprises are unprepared for their rapid growth in business.  It is this type of an unexpected scenario that hits these companies.  Yet some do go bust because of being unprepared.  But first let’s peer inside a business architecture domain and how it can be used to meet the onslaught.

It’s Not All About Size
What does a normal business do when confronted with the need to expand rapidly?  The advice from experts is not to go out and try to gobble up all available warehouse spaces. Instead, it has to go inward, take a deep breath and reflect on the vision that the company

founders had in mind from the start. This is precisely the purpose of the business architecture.  It describes the organization’s value chain by connecting strategic objectives and core capabilities with its existing processes, products, customers and information systems.  As shown in the diagram, the Business Capabilities domain consists of elements such as vision, principles, requirements that drive the generation of business services.

If you look carefully at the diagram, you will notice that elements such as constraint and assumption can put a brake on speculation.  The business architecture is a neutral way to identify what is strategically important.  Perhaps becoming too big too fast is not what the company wants to do.  It may be that laying out the foundation for customer loyalty is.  It’s a matter of growing in a smart way that is of utmost importance.
